Countless people make a Full Tilt Poker download with the hopes that one day they will have the bankroll to play against Tom Dwan, whose Internet screen name is “durrr”. The 23 year old has become one of the most well known poker players in the world. He started as an online player on a Full Tilt Poker download, so it makes sense that most of his success has come online. More and more he’s making a name for himself in live poker, however, and he’s becoming a very well rounded player. He has participated in several live tournaments since becoming legal in the U.S., and he has been on TV on several high stakes poker shows.

When Dwan first learned to play poker, he started on Paradise, one of the top Texas Hold’em sites back then. He started playing cash games on Full Tilt once he stopped finding sit-&-go’s challenging. Dwan has played countless hours online. Mastering the art of multi-tabling allowed him to play hundreds of thousands of hands on money poker sites, and his bankroll rose impressively as he climbed to higher buy-ins.

Having your name synonymous with high stakes online poker doesn’t mean your game is variance-free. Dwan prefers to play heads-up poker, so it’s not surprising that he has had some crazy swings during his career. He has won millions of dollars at a time, but he has also lost millions. The most well known downswing of his career so far was courtesy of a someone from Sweden called “Isildur1”, who wanted to play heads-up with him on multiple tables. By the time they were finished, Dwan’s bankroll was around $5 million poorer. Losing that much money would cause me to give up poker and just start playing Internet slots, but Dwan has obviously proven that he can handle the mental challenge poker provides.

In January 2009, Dwan announced his $1 million challenge. He is willing to play any player (except Phil Galfond) heads-up for 50k hands while playing 4 tables. The winner at the end of the series will also win some extra cash. If Dwan wins, his opponent will give him $500k. However, if the challenger wins, Dwan will give him $1.5 million. Patrik Antonius is Dwan’s first opponent for this challenge, and to date Dwan is leading by $1.8 million after 40k hands. If you can afford it, you’re welcome to accept this challenge, too. Just download free poker from Full Tilt and make a deposit.

So far Dwan’s cashes in live US poker rooms amount to almost $1.5 million. He has done a lot of travelling, and as such he has tournament cashes in Europe and Australia aside from the U.S. He made his best ever WSOP finish this year, making almost $400k after coming 2nd in a $1.5k NLHE event. Dwan’s failure to win a bracelet affected a lot of people other than himself because it’s reported that there were a lot of bracelet bets for and against him in 2010.

Dwan always had respect from the online pros, but his live event cashes and appearances on Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker have caused the live pros to notice him, too. All this success and he is only 23 years old! We can only expect more great things in the years to come, too. If you aspire to be as great as Dwan one day, you need to get rid of those bingo codes and play some poker instead.
